ImageMobilize the Immigrant Vote (MIV), the multi-ethnic coalition of organizations across the state registering, educating, and mobilizing immigrant communities for electoral participation, releases their voter guide today.  The MIV Voter Guide highlights ballot issues that address the most important needs of immigrants and their families, as well as those that will benefit low-income and other marginalized communities.

“What’s special about this guide is that the analysis and recommendations are based on community participation forums across the state.  Immigrants are offering these recommendations to fellow immigrant and U.S.-born Californians.” commented Mari Ryono MIV Coordinating Director.

The MIV 2008 Voter Guide is published in six different languages with ballot measure explanations and recommendations for the nine measures on the ballot that will most directly impact immigrant and low-income communities.

Among other critical points of interest, the voter guide takes a stance against initiatives that would criminalize immigrants and disenfranchised communities (Proposition 6), and clarifies that the Increased Production of Renewable Energy measure (7) and the Funding to Promote Alternative Energy and Fuel measure (11) could inadvertently hurt immigrant and the low-income as these communities are currently not represented in the planning and execution of such enterprises.

“A highlight of this guide is the MIV 2008 Immigrant Voices Platform. The platform outlines seven critical issue areas for low-income immigrants and is designed as a tool to help voters make decisions on local and statewide ballot measures,” shared MIV Steering Committee member and Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action (PILA) Program Coordinator Claudia Gómez-Arteaga.

MIV is coordinated by Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition (BAIRC), Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), California Partnerships (CAP), Korean Resource Center (KRC), Partnership for Immigrant Leadership & Action (PILA) and Services, and Immigrant Rights & Education Network (SIREN).  MIV is a partner in the greater immigrant and voter mobilization movement, and is a member organization of the We Are America Alliance.
