A Long Island Debate Offers Unique Opportunity to Address Immigration, said immigrant leaders who urged Senators McCain and Obama at an October 14th press conference to lay out their plans on how to fix the nation's broken immigration system during their final debate on Long Island.
Long Island is an epicenter of the national immigration debate. The issue is controversial in towns and cities across the U.S., yet there has been no mention of immigration in the debates so far. Speakers discussed what they hope to hear from the candidates and describe unprecedented efforts to get out the immigrant vote. Long Island community leaders described efforts there to find local solutions in the absence of federal immigration reform, and immigrant voters talked about what this election means for them. Participants included: Chung-Wha Hong, The New York Immigration Coalition Patrick Young, Central American Resource Center (Long Island) Members and leaders of Latino, Chinese, and Korean immigrant communities |
